Reporting & Sensemaking

About Lawrence Hall of Science

The Lawrence Hall of Science, affiliated with the University of California, Berkeley, is known for its inclusive and hands-on approach to science education. It has developed resources such as curricula and educational tools, including Amplify Science, in collaboration with the digital learning team at Amplify. This curriculum is designed to address new science standards and reflects state-of-the-art practices in science teaching and learning.

Project Overview & My Role

During an extended collaboration with Berkeley's Lawrence Hall of Science, I played a key role in initiating the design phase for an enhanced reporting and sense-making system. Our primary objective was to develop a tool to provide educators with actionable insights into student progress, thus aiding in the refinement of teaching methodologies. Additionally, we aimed to create a robust system capable of evaluating student comprehension and sense-making within technology-enhanced learning environments aligned with NGSS standards.

Designing for NGSS Standards

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are K-12 science standards, organized into three dimensions: disciplinary core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. They integrate English language arts and mathematics with science content, and can be rearranged within a grade level to reflect the interconnected nature of science.

Each standard within NGSS falls under one of the following categories:

Efficient Assessment Management: Enhancing Teaching & Learning

Effortlessly reassign students to different categories with just a simple drag-and-drop interaction

Our platform streamlines the assessment process, providing educators with intuitive tools for dynamic student assignment management. Through a straightforward drag-and-drop interface, educators can easily adjust student placements between categories, allowing for personalized assessments. Our system instantly evaluates these placements against predefined rubric criteria, offering immediate feedback on student progress. This seamless integration of assessment management and automated evaluation empowers educators to make informed decisions and track student growth effectively, enhancing the teaching and learning experience.

Insightful Reporting: Empowering Educators with Actionable Data

Toggle between immediate best skills or areas of growth

Our reporting feature design offers educators a comprehensive view of student progression metrics and outcomes across six intuitive images. With a convenient toggle, educators can quickly switch between viewing immediate best skills or identifying areas where students have overcome challenges. This streamlined functionality empowers educators to make informed, data-driven decisions tailored to individual student needs, fostering ongoing student success.

Conclusion

In conclusion, our reporting feature stands as a significant advancement in supporting educators to implement NGSS-aligned instruction effectively. By prioritizing user engagement, educator satisfaction, student progression monitoring, data utilization analysis, and system performance, we have developed a robust tool that empowers educators with actionable insights for informed decision-making. As we refine our reporting feature, we remain committed to assisting educators in fostering student success in science and engineering practices. Together, we inspire a new generation of learners to embrace critical thinking and problem-solving skills vital for navigating our evolving world.
